Mr Colin O’Byrne will be joining us at the upcoming 9th International Urban Design Conference at the Hyatt Canberra from Monday 7 November to Wednesday 9 November 2016.
Colin is a lecturer in urban design at the National School of Surveying, University of Otago. His research is focused on the relationship between the social and political structure of development processes and the associated form of the built environment. His current research projects include studies of land development processes in Canada and New Zealand.
Colin will present on ‘How did that get built? Employing urban governance frameworks to understand urban design and development projects’.
Relationships between the process and products of urban design have been analysed and articulated using conceptual frameworks that emphasize different perspectives. This presentation summarises these and compares them with analytical frameworks used in the field of urban governance studies. While there is a reasonable amount of overlap between these areas, frameworks employed in urban governance analysis can offer more comprehensive insights into the forces and practices that combine to shape the built form. These tools are useful for understanding why places look the way they do and for envisioning future design and development processes.
