Abstract: Cities that inspire and enliven social and cultural interaction within the public realm are those that encourage diversity and distinct character. They promote exceptionally designed spaces, and are typically organic in form as born from creativity and original thought. Yet design professionals such as urban designers, landscape architects and architects are tasked with defining what makes a city truly liveable from highly prescribed norms and professional practices. This idea tends to be subjective and often ignores diverse aspirations and the fact that every city (place) is liveable by degrees. Which begs the question: Is what makes a city liveable the same as what makes a city desirable?

The 8th International Urban Design Conference will be held at the Sofitel Brisbane from Monday 16 November to Wednesday 18 November 2015. To register for the 8th International Urban Design Conference click here.
