Ms Caroline Stalker, Director of Architectus and Adjunct Professor, School of Design, Creative Industries at QUT will present “The 21st Century City in Nature; Prospects for a new High Rise Urbanism”
“Today’s Australian urban lifestyles are characterised by long drives in air-conditioned cars from large air-conditioned homes to air-conditioned workplaces, shopping in air-conditioned centres without natural daylight.
At the end of the day we take refuge in our backyards and parks; we love these natural places in our suburban cities because they give us back that connection to nature and the outside.
This is precious to us because, as author Richard Louv argues in his book The Nature Principle: Human Restoration and the End of Nature-Deficit Disorder: “… reconnection to the natural world is fundamental to human health, well-being, spirit, and survival.”
Richard Louv’s observation expresses a powerful and compelling challenge to us all as city makers; how can urban high-rise create those connections to nature that are so fundamental to our survival?”
Caroline’s presentation will address one of the most compelling challenges for 21st century designers: how to create a super dense urbanism that inscribes a very positive and direct relationship to nature and with each other.
We hope you can join us in Adelaide.
